Mission Brewing is a craft brewery based in San Diego, California, that produces a variety of beers with high quality and innovation. Their headquarters is located in a former Wonder Bread factory in downtown San Diego, where they brew and distribute their beers to local and national markets.
When Mission Brewing decided to open a new taproom in the Kensington neighborhood, they wanted to create a space that reflects their brand identity and values, while also respecting the historical and architectural context of the area. Kensington is a historic community that is undergoing a commercial revitalization, with many new businesses and attractions opening up. The taproom is situated in a 1950s Spanish-style building that is part of the city’s historical preservation program.
To achieve their vision, Mission Brewing hired me as their interior designer to work closely with their CEO, board members, architect, and general contractors. I was responsible for designing the interior layout, finishes, furniture, lighting, and accessories for the taproom, which occupies 1,359 square feet of space. My design concept was inspired by the industrial nature of the headquarters building, but also incorporated elements of warmth and comfort to create a welcoming and cozy atmosphere for the guests.
As an interior designer, I value service, positivity, and resourcefulness. I always strive to provide the best possible solutions for my clients, while also maintaining a positive and professional attitude. I enjoy working with different materials, styles, and colors, and finding creative ways to transform spaces and enhance their functionality and aesthetics.
The main features of the taproom design are:
• A large bar area that showcases the brick backbar and the beer taps, where guests can order and enjoy their drinks. The bar face is detailed with synthetic leather and metal studs, adding a touch of elegance and texture. The bar top is made of reclaimed wood, giving it a rustic and authentic feel.
• A spacious seating area that offers a variety of options for the guests, such as wooden tables, chairs, stools, and long banquettes. The seating area is divided into zones by weathered face brick accent walls, which create a sense of intimacy and contrast with the restored concrete floors. The furniture is upholstered in dark metallic colors, complementing the industrial theme of the space.
• A front patio area that extends the taproom to the outdoors, where guests can enjoy the fresh air and the views of the neighborhood. The patio is enclosed by a new railing that features clean horizontal lines, creating a modern and sleek look. Wooden planters are placed along the railing, adding a touch of greenery and natural beauty. A new roll-up garage door connects the patio to the interior, allowing for more interaction and flexibility between the spaces.
• A restroom area that is updated with new fixtures, tile, and paint, to provide a clean and comfortable experience for the guests. A new urinal is added to the men’s restroom, increasing the capacity and convenience.
The Mission Brewing taproom is a modern industrial delight that offers a unique and enjoyable experience for the beer lovers and the community. It is a place where guests can relax, socialize, and taste the amazing craft beers that Mission Brewing has to offer.
